John became artistic at an early age. His first job was hand planing a board in a cabinet shop in Mexico City, where he lived at the time, at the age of 14. He took a small piece of wood home and carved it into a figurine. That opened his young eyes to the world of wood and woodworking, and he hasn't stopped working with wood since.
John has had a deep love for wood for a very long time. The wood speaks to him - he studies the grain and patterns and colors and then then magically it becomes something. He has made boxes, briefcases, crates, business card holders, bowls, furniture, signs, jewelry, you name it. Big and small, they are all sanded and finished by hand, one by one, into a unique gift. After so many years of producing wonderful products and working so closely with so many different woods, he makes building look easy. The shop is small but extremely efficient.
Marian has fallen in love with the process of weaving veneers:
She starts by cutting very fine strips of wood called veneers, sanding and sorting them. She plays with colors and patterns, sometimes creating new patterns. Once they are woven into the correct size, they get lined and framed for strength and support, and they head to the shop to become boxes. She also helps by cutting, shaping and finishing cutting boards, as well as assembling and finishing coasters. What a lesson in patience!
